진공에서 빛의 속도와 매질에서의 빛의 속도의 비를 그 매질의 굴절률(index of refraction)이라고 한다.

굴절률은 보통 n으로 표시하며 다음과 같다.

n = c / v

c : 진공에서의 광속(보통 300,000km/s 사용)
v : 매질에서의 광속

공기(1.00027), 메틸알콜(1.3294), 물(1.3330),
투명 아크릴(1.4913), 석영(1.4584), 소금(1.5443),
이황화탄소(1.6280), 크라운 유리(1.520),
납유리(가벼운 것)(1.575), 납유리(무거운 것)(1.650),
납유리(가장 무거운 것)(1.890), 다이아몬드(2.4175)
※ 노란빛(λ=6000Å)에 대한 굴절률임
