The mean shear stress or tractive force per unit area may be obtained by resolution of forces along the wetted boundary of the channel, assuming that the component of weight of water acting in the direction of channel slope is balanced by the total shear resistance of water acting on the wetted perimeter.

¥ó0P = ¥ãAS0

where ¥ó0 is the mean shear stress on the bed, P the wetted perimeter, ¥ã the unit weight of water, A the cross-sectional area, and S0 the longitudinal slope of the bed. The mean shear stress is expressed as

¥ó0 = ¥ãAS0/P = ¥ãRS0

where R is the hydraulic radius.
