The polar coordinates r and ¥è can be converted to the Cartesian coordinates x and y by using the trigonometric functions sine and cosine:

x = r cos ¥è
y = r sin ¥è

The Cartesian coordinates x and y can be converted to polar coordinates r and ¥è with r ¡Ã 0 and ¥è in the interval (−¥ð, ¥ð) by

r = ( x^2 + y^2)^(1/2)
¥è = atan (y/x)
atan : arctangent
