Area of an equilateral triangle.

As shown in the figure, the height h of an equilateral triangle with a side of length a can be obtained as follows.

The Pythagorean theorem can be used.

a^(2) = (a/2)^(2)+h^(2)

h^(2) = a^(2) - (a/2)^(2) = a^(2) * (3/4)

h = a*(3/4)^(1/2) = (a/2)*(3)^(1/2)

Thus, the area of an equilateral triangle is

A = (1/2)*a*h = 3^(1/2) / 4 * a^(2)
