For distance and area on a map with a scale of 1/S (1:S), the following relationship applies with actual(real-life) distance and area.

RD = MD*S
where, RD : actual distance, MD : distance on map

Letting the area on map as MA, and the two sides comprising the area as MDa and MDb respectively,

MA = MDa*MDb

Converting to a real-life scale (1:1),

RA = RDa * RDb = MDa*S * MDb*S = MDa*MDb*S^2 = MA*S^2

where RA : actual area, RDa : actual length of MDa, RDb : actual length of MDb

Depending on the unit of measurement, actual area in m^2 is calculated by the following relationship.

RA = C*MA*S^2

where C : coefficient for unit conversion,
              for  MA in  m^2, C=1
              for MA in cm^2, C=0.0001
              for MA in mm^2, C=0.000001
