D in the equation no.1 is equal to the total depth. Inserting V in the equation no.2 into the equation no.3 and rearranging,

L = 2C*(h*H)^(1/2) = 2C((D-h)*h)^(1/2)

Wheb (D-h)*h is at maxumum, L is also at maximum. Then,
h2=D/2 and the flow velocity V2 and maximum L (Lmax) are as follows:
