Open channel mean flow velocity formula ( Chezy formula )

This formula was derived by Chezy in 1775 for estimating the mean velocity of uniform flow. It is applicable to uniform flows in open channels having a constant channel slope and prismatic cross section.

Derivation was made based on assumption that energy decrease
between two sections is equal to the friction of flow.

Since energy slope is equal to channel slope in uniform flows, channel slope can be used instead of the energy slope i in the
formula.

V = (g/C)^(1/2) * (Ri)^(1/2)

Letting  Ch = (g/C)^(1/2),

V = Ch * (R*i)^(1/2)
where, Ch is called the Chezy coefficient.

Ch has the following relationship with the Darchy-Weisbach friction factor f.

Ch = (8*g/f)^(1/2)
