Calculation of required diameter of a pin (shear stress at both sides)

As shown in figure, there is a pin connection on which the load P is acting.
The required minimum diameter of pin is calculated as the following.

Letting the pin diameter as d1, the cross
sectional area of the pin, A1, is :

A1 = (¥ð/4)*d1^2

Letting the allowable shear stress of the pin as ¥ó, allowable load P is as below, since both sides (a-a, b-b) are under shear stress.

P = 2A1* ¥ó = 2*(¥ð/4)*d1^2 * ¥ó  

Thus, the required diameter of the pin d1is :

d1 = (4*P / (2*¥ð*¥ó))^(1/2)
