Volume of hydrogen gas : VH (liter)
Volume of oxygen gas : VO (liter)

¡á Reaction equation

2H2 + O2 = 2H2O

Reaction of two molecules of hydrogen and one molecule of oxygen¼Ò makes two molecules of water.

(Ratio of volumes of hydrogen gas and oxygen gas is 2 : 1.)


¡á Total volume of gases : VT = VH + VO


¡á if volume of hydrogen is less than twice the volume of oxygen (VH ¡Â 2VO), all of hydrogen is used.

¢º VH2O : Volume of vapor after reaction (liter)




¢º VOa : Volume of remaining oxygen after reaction (liter)


¡á  if volume of hydrogen is larger than twice the volume of oxygen (VH ¡Ã 2VO), all of hydrogen is used.

¢º VH2O : Volume of vapor after reaction (liter)




¢º VHa : Volume of remaining hydrogen (liter)


¡Ø In equation No.3, if VOa > 0, excess of oxygen remains after reaction.
¡Ø In equation No.5, if VHa > 0, excess of hydrogen remains after reaction.
¡Ø If VOa = VHa = 0, complete reaction.
