Penetrating depth of a pipe connected to another pipe of a larger diameter

As shown in figure, there is a pipe
having its diameter d which is connected to another pipe having larger diameter D. The length of peneration, h, along the centerline of smaller pipe is calculated as below by the Pythagorean theorem.

h = D/2 - ((D/2)^2 - (d/2)^2)^(1/2)
