When an object of its mass m (kg) collides with a spring having its spring constant k (N / m) at speed v (m / s), the maximum compression length x (m) of spring can be calculated as follows.

Kinetic energy of the object = strain energy of the spring

(1/2) m*v^2 = (1/2) k*x^2

Rearranging,

x = ( m*v^2 / k )^(1/2)
