Type1 Type2
Calculation of the distance between a quadratic curve and a straight line:

Quadratic curve: y = ax^2 + bx + c
Line: y = px + q

¡à Input data

¡à Find the equation of the straight line that meets (is tangent to) the quadratic equation by moving the straight line parallel, and find the distance between the two straight lines.

Translated linear equation: y = px + k

Combining two equations, find the condition for being tangent.

ax^2 + (b-p) x + (c-k) = 0

If meeting at one point,

(b-p)^2 - 4a (c-k) = 0

¡à The distance between two straight lines y = px + q and y = px + k

If x=0 is assigned to a point on y = px + k, we get (0, k).  Then, we can find the distance between this point and the straight line y = px + q because (0, k).
