Length of one side of a regular octagon in contact with a square

As shown in the figure, if the length of one side of a regular octagon, in contact with a square having each side length L, is x,

L = x + 2*a ¡æ a = (L-x)/2

Since x = 2^(1/2)*a, substituting 'a' with this relationship, we get,

x = (L-x) / 2^(1/2)

(1 + 2^(1/2))*x = L / 2^(1/2)

Thus,

x = L / (1+2^(1/2))
