The allowable load of a steel rod with an allowable tensile stress ¥ò and a diameter D can be calculated as follows.

From ¥ò = P/A,

P = ¥ò*A = ¥ò*(¥ð/4)*D^2

If the unit of P is kN, the unit of ¥ò is MPa, and D is in mm, then,

P = (¥ò*¥ð*D^2)/4000
