A boat took a round trip for the distance L (km) from river downstream to the upstream and back to downstream. If it took t1 (hr) to go upstream, and t2 (hr) to go downstream from the upstream. The actual speed of the boat, V (km/hr), can be obtained as follows.

If the velocity of the river flow is Vr (km/hr),

t1 = L/(V-Vr)
t1*V - t1*Vr = L
Vr = (t1*V - L)/t1

t2 = L/(V+Vr)
t2*V+t2*Vr = L
Vr = (L-t2*V)/t2

Since (t1*V - L)/t1 = (L-t2*V)/t2,

t2*(t1*V - L) = t1*(L-t2*V)

2*t1*t2*V = (t1+t2)*L

V = (t1+t2)*L / (2*t1*t2)

V = (t1+t2)*L / (2*t1*t2)
