Obtaining the general term of a geometric sequence, using the two terms

If the k-th term of a geometric sequence is ak and the j-th term is aj, the general term of this geometric sequence, an, is obtained as follows.

Let the first term as 'a' and the common ratio as 'r', then,

a*r^(k-1) = ak

a*r^(j-1) = aj

If k < j,

aj/ak = r^(j-1-k+1) = r^(j-k)

Thus, the common ratio r is :
