Synthetic resistance, tetrahedral arrangement

As shown in the figure, when the resistance R (¥Ø) is connected to each side of the tetrahedron, calculate the combined resistance between the two vertices.

If two vertices are A and B, a resistor R is connected between A and B, and there are A to C and D to B connections.

Since connections of A to C and D to B is of bridge type and the resistance is all R, no current flows between C and D. Thus, only the connection between A, C and B and the connection between A, D and B need to be considered.

Therefore, since the connection of A to B are three parallel connections of R, 2R, and 2R, the composite resistance RT is as follows.

1/RT = 1/R + 1/2R + 1/2R = 1/R + 1/R = 2/R

RT = (1/2)R
