Calculate the shear stress ¥ó (MPa) generated in the shaft when a circular cross-section shaft with diameter D (m) rotates at N (rpm) and transmits power of P (kW).

shaft torque

T = ¥ó*Jz/r = ¥ó*(¥ð/16)*D^3

Jz: polar moment of inertia of circular section = (¥ð/2)*r^4

Since power P = T*¥ø and ¥ø= 2*¥ð*N/60 (rad/s),

P = ¥ó*(¥ð/16)*D^3 * 2*¥ð*N/60

= (¥ð^2/8)*¥ó*D^3*N/60

Since the unit of the result is MW, if it is expressed in kW,

P = (125/60)*¥ð^2*¥ó*D^3*N

becomes,

¥ó = 60*P/(125*¥ð^2*D^3*N)
