As shown in the figure, when a force F (N) is applied to the end of a homogeneous rod of length L (m) and self-weight W (N), find the angle ¥è (¢ª) the rod makes with the wall.

Since the self-weight W of the rod acts in the middle of the rod and balances the moment around the hinge, the following equation holds.

W*L/2*sin(¥è) = F*L*cos(¥è)

sin(¥è)/cos(¥è) = 2*F/W

tan(¥è) = 2*F/W

Thus,

¥è = arctan(2*F/W)
