Find the ratio PR of power consumption when n light bulbs with resistance R (¥Ø) are connected in series and in parallel.

The applied voltage is V (V), the power consumption when connected in series is Ps (W), and the power consumption when connected in parallel is Pp (W).

When connected in series, the total resistance is n*R and the current is I = V/(n*R), so

Ps = V*V/(n*R) = V^2/(n*R)

In parallel, the current through each resistor is I = V/R and the total current is n*V/R, so

Pp = V*n*V/R = V^2*n/R

Therefore,

PR = Pp/Ps = n^2
