As shown the figure, when the concentrated load P (kN) is applied on a simple beam with a length of L (m), reaction force RA and RB (kN) at the supports A and B, shear force and bending moment can be calculated as follows.

1. Reaction forces

The moment at the support A is 0, so a*P = L*RB

RB = (a/L)*P

The sum of forces for vertical direction is 0, therefore,

RA = P-RB = (1-a/L)*P

2. Shear force, ¡è¡é : (+), ¡é¡è : (-)

For 0 ¡Â x ¡Â a : Vx = RA

For a ¡Â x ¡Â L : Vx = -RB

3. Bending Moment

For 0 ¡Â x ¡Â a : Mx = RA*x

For a ¡Â x ¡Â L : Mx = RB*(L-x)

Maximum bending moment is occurred at the point applied P.
